with Grace Ford, FNP-BC

Following through on New Year’s resolutions is usually easier said than done, but we’re here to help you see them through. Here are 10 tips to becoming healthier and happier in 2016.

GET A PHYSICAL

Most people do not take the time to see their doctor until something is wrong. Be proactive this year and get a wellness physical and head off any potential issues.

MANAGE STRESS

If chronic stress starts impacting your sleep, overall mental state or results in unexplained weight gain, then it is time to reevaluate what your stress triggers are and plan a new response to them.

CUT BACK ON ALCOHOL

Drinking alcohol in excess affects the brain and can increase the risk of depression, memory loss or even seizures. It can also boost your risk of liver and heart disease, stroke and cancer.

QUIT SMOKING

The health benefits start occurring within 20 minutes of your last cigarette. Our providers have great tools to help you fight the urge to smoke, including medications.

GET MORE SLEEP

Sleep deprivation impacts everything from hypertension to depression to obesity. Adults should strive to get at least seven hours of sleep a night and avoid “binge sleeping” on weekends to catch up.

GET YOUR CHOCOLATE FIX

Cocoa contains antioxidants that decrease plaque buildup in blood vessels and can lower blood pressure.

BRUSH & FLOSS DAILY

Unhealthy gums and teeth has been linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke and bacterial pneumonia.

EAT FRUITS & VEGETABLES

They are packed with antioxidants that soak up free radicals, slowing the aging process and fighting off conditions like cancer.

EXERCISE

Just 30 minutes a day of any kind of physical activity can cut your risk of developing heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.
