Season’s Eatings: Holiday Eating Tips for Diabetics
with Grace Ford, FNP-BC
For diabetics, the holiday season can be fraught with temptations. The good news is that you don’t have to give up your favorite seasonal foods. With a little preparation, you’ll still be able to enjoy the season’s bounty of food and stay in control of your diabetes.
THINK ABOUT THE TIMING OF YOUR HOLIDAY MEAL
Many families eat large meals at odd times during the holidays. Plan strategies in advance to keep your blood sugar regulated if your meal does not line up with your normal eating schedule.
PLAN ADDITIONAL SNACKS
Have foods to nibble on while you are cooking or in between meals. Choose foods that won’t sabotage your glucose levels like cheese and vegetables.
TRY HEALTHIER VERSIONS OF YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY FOODS
Your favorite casseroles can often taste as good with small ingredient changes. Try light or fat free sour cream. Try steaming items instead of sautéing them in butter or heavy sauces. Use a little less sugar in your fruit pies, or a sugar substitute, to accentuate the natural sweet flavors of the fruit.
ENJOY EVERYTHING – JUST IN SMALLER PORTIONS
There is no reason to deprive yourself of your favorite holiday foods eaten in moderation. The key is to keep your total carbohydrate intake just like a regular day.
